Next Nissan LEAF will have double the range – Harte Cars, Hartford, CT

The 2014 Nissan LEAF is available in three trim levels: LEAF S, SV and SL, along with option packages offering advanced systems such as Around View® Monitor and 7-speaker Bose® audio. Enhancements for 2014 include the addition of the RearView Monitor as standard equipment on all models (previously part of the Charge Package) and one new exterior color – Gun Metallic (seven total available colors).

Nissan engineers are hard at work on new battery technology that will go into the next Nissan LEAF, due in an estimated three or four years. Currently the all-electric LEAF has an estimated range of 84 miles, already an improvement from last year’s 73 miles. Nissan’s goal for the next generation EV is much higher, however.

The new goal is 186 miles or 300 kilometers, which puts it in the range of hydrogen vehicles and cars like the Tesla Model S. Nissan has been working on battery pack improvements for the current LEAF as well, and an all-electric INFINITI is in the near future once the new technology has been further developed.

INFINITI’s EV will be packaged as a more traditional sedan, which should allow for more space for the battery pack. The LEAF will remain a hatchback, but will have very different styling.

Nissan brand global design chief, Mamoru Aoki, said that EVs no longer need to grab people’s attention with radical designs. The next LEAF will look more mainstream, and share design cues with other Nissan products such as the recently redesigned Rogue crossover. It will, however, still have unique styling that sets it apart from gas models, such as no front grille.

“The current LEAF is aiming too much at an EV-like appearance,” said Aoki. “Tesla doesn’t look EV at all. The Tesla S just looks very nice, very sporty, sleek, but very authentic.”
